I’m Karla! a second-year MSc student in Evolutionary Biology. My current research compares historical insect records from the Kullenberg collection with present-day observations around Uppsala, tracking long-term shifts in insect communities and their responses to environmental change. The project also incorporates museomics, using historical specimens alongside modern collections to link long-term biodiversity trends to genetic change.
I work across both field and lab settings. My background includes studying orchid bees (Euglossini) as bioindicators of habitat health, and studying how urbanization and disturbance affects orchid bee diversity and pollination in the cloud forests of Sierra Madre Oriental, Mexico. I’m particularly interested in insect resilience and adaptation strategies as climate change and disturbance reshape insetc populations and distribution.
Alongside my research, I care about climatic and enviromental justice, connecting biodiversity science to the communities it affects.
